실존적 위협이 되는 선거

미국 대선에 대해 찾아보다 Christianity Today에서 좋은 기사를 발견했다.

 

"This is the most important election of our lifetime.” I’ve heard this said every presidential election in my lifetime, but, this time, the stakes are being raised even higher. The 2024 election is not just the most important—the consequences of it are existential."

 

나는 매 선거 때마다 "이번 선거는 우리 일생에 가장 중요한 선거"라는 말을 듣는다. 하지만 이번 선거는 유독 그 중요성이 부각되면서 선거의 결과가 우리의 '실존'에 영향을 미칠 거라는 이야기까지 나온다.

 

"For Christians, nothing is truly a threat to our survival or existence. We are a people who believe Jesus Christ when he promised to return to his fallen creation, to wipe every tear from every eye and to make all things new. We believe that this story we are living does not end in violence, chaos, and strife—it ends with perfect righteousness, justice, and peace."

 

기독교인들에게는 그 어떤 것도 생존이나 실존 자체에 진정한 위협이 될 수 없다. 우리는 예수 그리스도가 타락한 세상에 다시 오셔서 모든 눈물을 닦아주시고 모든 것을 새롭게 하시겠다는 약속을 믿는 사람들이다. 우리는 우리의 삶이 폭력, 혼란, 그리고 갈등이 아닌 완전한 의와 정의, 그리고 평화로 끝날 것임을 믿고 있다. 

 

"The promise of Christ’s return does not demand quietism or political escapism; rather, it should prompt faithful political work that can resist the impulse toward violence and injustice ...  if ultimate justice is promised by God, we have the freedom to seek provisional justice here on earth as faithfully as we can, without fearing that if we fail all is lost."

 

그리스도의 재림에 대한 약속은 조용한 은둔 생활이나 정치적 회피를 요구하지 않는다. 오히려, 폭력과 불의에 대한 충동을 저지할 수 있는 신실한 정치적 활동을 촉구한다 ... 궁극적인 정의가 하나님에 의해 약속되었기 때문에 우리는 실패하더라도 모든 것이 끝난다는 두려움 없이 이 땅에서 가능한 한 신실하게 임시의 정의를 추구할 자유가 있다.

 

"We can fight for justice, advocate for the oppressed, and seek flourishing in our own neighborhoods without worrying that if our candidate loses or our advocacy fails it means that our very existence is threatened ... Within the frame of God’s redemptive story, these small acts of justice and peace take on greater significance than the desperate attempts to bring peace to earth at any cost."

 

우리는 우리가 지지하는 후보가 패배하거나 우리의 선거 활동이 실패한다고 해서 우리의 존재 자체가 위협받는다는 걱정을 할 필요 없이 정의를 위해 싸우고, 억압받는 사람들을 옹호하며, 우리 지역 사회의 번영을 추구할 수 있다 ... 하나님의 구속사 안에선 정의와 평화를 위한 작은 행위가 그 어떠한 대가를 치르더라도 지구에 평화를 가져오려는 절박한 시도보다 더 큰 의미를 갖는다.

 

마치 대통령 선거에 나의 실존과 나라의 운명이 걸린 것처럼 여기는 대한민국이나 미국에서 사는 크리스천들이 마음에 두고 있어야 할 내용인 듯하다.
